I was surprised last night when I went to Military Homefront’s Plan My Move Calendar and noticed that we have less than 3 months before we are due to be house hunting up in WA (For us this means our first drive across the US with our HHGs in a Penske.). I’m not sure why I was surprised, after all I’ve been fretting about it all along; but for some reason now that we are inside of the 3 month bracket, it’s all becoming very sobering.
I’ve started packing, I’ve gotten the utility room and 1/3rd of the kitchen packed. I’m supposed to be packing right now, but I thought I’d take a break 😉 . Most people I’ve talked to are commenting about me packing so far in advance, but I’m three months behind; That is if you compare this move to our last. But I guess if you compare everything to our last move, we are behind the curve with everything, after all we did have almost a year to plan that move. LOL
The good thing is, I haven’t paid a dime for boxes! On our last move I shelled out a lot of money for moving supplies. This move I’ve gotten boxes from the recycling center, JPs (the local liquer store), and the CDC (base daycare) my kids attended. I found all my packing material (newspaper), by contacting the base newspaper. I actually contacted the number on the paper that they give if you want to suggest a story or put something in the paper. When I talked to them I asked what they do with all their old papers each Thursday when they place the new papers in the stands. I was put on hold and when the lady came back on the phone she said that the base paper is actually distributed through Jacksonville, and all the old papers go back down there; But then she told me that the editor had a huge cabinet full of papers that he needed to get rid of and that I could come and pick up as much as I needed. I showed up with my beach cart (half as tall as me) and filled it up! As for the tape, I bought the it at Walmart in a 4 pack, but I’ve been told I can get it at the dollar store, so I’ll check there when I need more. It’s been wonderful knowing that all of our packing supplies have only cost us a few bucks between gas and the cost of the tape!
I’ve tried to pack more in smaller boxes this time around. I’m really bad at packing HEAVY boxes, and I get all sorts of bad looks from those that help us load and unload. So this time I’ve chosen smaller boxes, and while they are still heavy… they aren’t as bad to carry as big heavy boxes. LOL
I hope that by the end of April I’ll have 80% of the house packed, leaving May and June for visiting family and finishing up with everything else we’ve put off. Then the weeks before we load the truck, I can pack the rest.
Well with that, I guess I need to return to packing!
