I had an awesome opportunity to take my three Navy Brats to see Monsters University at El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. The best part about this opportunity was not just getting to see a great Disney movie, we got to go to the theater where Disney premiers all their films. Our three brats anxiously waited in the backseat of our SUV as we drove into the parking structure of the Dolby Theater, we got to see the massive building where the Oscars are presented and to be completely honest, I kept looking around hoping for a celebrity to appear in some corner. It did not happen.
As we crossed Hollywood Blvd my brats caught a glimpse of the marquee of El Capitan and were instantly excited. I have to admit, while I’ve done this with other Disney films, but I was really looking forward to this one! There is something about big ol’ Sully and Mike Wazowski that I love. I want to hug them…that has to be it!
We entered El Capitan, took the stairs up to the balcony seats and anxiously waited for the “Pep Rally” about to begin. You can always count on Disney to put together an awesome show. From the fun experience at concessions to your seat it’s all an “experience.” The theater was filled with organ music of many Disney movies and then the party really started. Cheerleaders dressed in appropriate MU gear began to rally everyone for the film! The theater was filled with people yelling, ROAR and GO MU! We were even able to see Sully and Mike before they had to run to roll the film for our viewing pleasure.
I will avoid spoilers for those who have not seen the movie, but I have to give you a little something to get you out there! I loved that we started the movie seeing Mike Wazowski as a child. He was a young curious monster that had dreams and was going to fulfill them. His love affair with Monsters Incorporated started young, and he held onto his desire to attend Monster University versus the other educational option in Monstropolis. Mike and Sully meet in Scarer Class at MU. Sully has the weight of his fathers history of a Top Scarer in Mostropolis. Sully and Mike Wazowski are not the characters we might remember from Monsters Inc, but this film helps you see the journey to that amazing friendship. We see them looking for their place in college life, and defining themselves on their own rather than from the accomplishments of their parents. We even get to see how Randall will become such a negative angry monster and how his desire to beat Sully began. New characters abound in this film, and they are characters that touch your heart.
I am thankful that my family is very good friends with someone who works in the projection room in the theater, she gave me a heads up. Stay after the credits, there is a little surprise!
I recommend Monsters University, it’s fun and I promise you will leave smiling. I think that one of the best things is seeing the evolution of what the characters were and how we know them in the first movie. My children loved it, the brats often quote lines and will laugh at things they remember even days later.
GO MONSTERS UNIVERSITY!!! YEAH MU!
