Recently Best Buy announced that its consumer tech services unit Geek Squad will participate in the national “Joining Forces” initiative supporting those who serve in the military and their families. The initiative, unveiled by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden at White House, will begin this summer at military bases deploying troops across the continental United States. Best Buy’s Geek Squad will support the educational emphasis of the multi-faceted program by offering customized training to help members of the armed services and their families connect through technology.

“Rapid advances in technology enable our brave service men and women to stay connected with their loved ones while proudly serving their country abroad or at home,” said George Sherman senior vice president of Best Buy Services. “We are honored to bring our companywide-commitment to providing access for people to one another with technology. Our employees look forward to helping families use technology to close the gaps in distance so often caused by the huge sacrifice of our service men and women.”

Best Buy’s Geek Squad will host a series of seminars focused on educating military families about using existing and cutting-edge technologies to connect and communicate with loved ones while deployed in the armed services. The seminars will be conducted this summer at 17 military bases around the U.S. that are deploying troops.

In addition to these family-oriented seminars, five, two-day Geek Squad Summer Academy sessions to educate military children about the inner workings of technology and inspire interest in technology careers will be provided. Like the popular Geek Squad Summer Academy sessions conducted with non-profit partners nationwide, the free classes will give military children hands-on experience with the latest-and-greatest gadgets in ways that spark fun and excitement. Each student will receive a certificate granting them “Junior Agent” status upon completing the program. Mark has eight top 10 hits to his name including “19 Something,” “Wish You Were Here” and “Don’t Laugh At Me;” all of which received nominations for Single, Song and Video of the Year by the Country Music Association. Wills won the Academy of Country Music’s award for Top New Male Vocalist in 1998.  In 2002, his single, “19 Something” spent six consecutive weeks at No. 1, was Billboard’s top country hit of the year and was the second most played song of the decade in 2009. His new CD, entitled LOOKING FOR AMERICA (featuring both the title cut that is currently receiving applause by radio and its listeners and the USA Cares Warrior Treatment Today campaign song, “Crazy Being Home”), will be available June 21, 2011. Wills is also the host of the hit television series “3 Gun Nation” on the Versus Network.  Proceeds from Mark’s last record, SECOND TIME AROUND, were donated in part to USA Cares.

Mark Wills takes a break from the set of his hit TV show 3 Gun Nation on the Versus Network to talk about the launch of the CrazyBeingHome.com Campaign.

Wills performed “Crazy Being Home” at the National “MilBlog” Conference during the opening reception/benefit for USA Cares. The sixth Annual blogger’s conference held April 29 at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. USA Cares was selected as the charitable beneficiary for the event this year.

Lou Diamond Phillips hosts the AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE series on the Military Channel

On today’s show join us as Lou Diamond Phillips stops in to talk about AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE on the Military Channel.

As each film makes its Military Channel premiere, host Lou Diamond Phillips will speak with retired and active duty officers who will reflect on the themes of that night’s film and also provide personal insight that puts each movie into a modern context.

“To have the opportunity to discuss the real-life events and strategies of the heroic efforts of service men and women from our nation’s history is something I will cherish,” said Lou Diamond Phillips. “In Military Channel’s AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE, I am honored to pick the brains of some of America’s heroes, who experienced first-hand the themes showcased in each week’s classic war film.”

In the premiere episode on Friday, April 1 at 8 PM ET, Lou Diamond Phillips and retired Marine Col. Arthur Athens discuss the themes behind the 1979 classic film The Great Santini, starring Robert Duvall, who was nominated for an Academy Award for this role.

– As the director of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership, the former Commandant of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Athens is uniquely able to comment on what it means to be a leader in the military and within a family’s home, where in his own life he has ten children.

AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE will include Kelly’s Heroes, Hart’s War, Windtalkers, Three Kings, and The Dirty Dozen among others.
