My family is new to this whole military life thing, like so new I don’t understand quite a bit of what my husband says to me when it has to do with his time away from home. (He’s an IT guy, so I never knew what he was talking about, but now it’s not just the job, but the people, places, and things I don’t understand.) I know to show my ID right side up when wanting to go on base, rookie mistake first time through the gate, I was so flustered at the whole gate guard thing, I showed my ID upside down… I won’t do that again! I know where the commissary is, and I (finally) know my husband’s SS# by heart. What I don’t know is the location of our first duty station.
My husband headed off to basic a whole year ago, June 2010. We knew he’d go to school for 6 months, then we’d be on our merry little way. Well his schooling changed right before he got there, as in his was the FIRST class to go through the new program. It was longer than the last program and again we had no real dates of when he’d be finished or where we’d be headed. So I packed up my little family and moved us down to his school, cause in reality it could have been 3 more months, or another 6+ months. Well thankfully we made the move (on our dime not the Navy’s), cause here we sit 6 months later with a few more to go, my husband still in training (a huge blessing, he’s getting amazing schooling!), and no orders yet. Word is they may show up this week! Fourteen months into our Navy career we may know where we’ll end up. That is the single question I’ve had from almost EVERYONE I’ve ever known and we may have an answer soon. I know, even if we get that answer it could change 50 times before we actually end up there, but I could at least have an answer. We’re here til the beginning of October, so I’m not packing bags yet, but I’d love to know if I will need some heavy duty winter gear… being an Arizona native the New England area will be a shock to our entire family. We’ll need some full body wool suits for sure and I think they’ll be hard to find, so I should start the hunt now, or I’ll just knit some up in the few months we have before we leave… that is unless we get tropical orders, then this family is set!!
I’m so excited and blessed to be able to be a resource to other new military spouses. It’s the blind leading the blind with me at the helm, but I know with this site and wonderful wives, the new military spouses will be seasoned spouses in no time!
