My full time job

For the past 11 years I have been a Residential Executive, or whatever the fancy term for housewife/ stay at home mom happens to be today. My job just grew into a full time I haven’t realized before. The business of moving out of state with the military is a full time job. My husband has gratefully had me run the house for the past 11 years. He likes that it just runs. We talk about the major comings and goings of the house, but the rest of it is up to me. This move obviously falls in my lap, and I’m glad to do it, but my oh my it has been a full time job. I have worked through the stack of papers that Fleet and Family gave me, I had my husband sign on all the dotted lines and we turned all the papers in to the correct places. He had a meeting where they filled out one of the papers Fleet and Family had helped me fill out, he was all prepared, he had it all there and just had to turn it in. I’ve had the pre-move look through our house by the movers. I got the info on what I need to do to prep for this exciting move, and each day I do a little towards getting us ready for the day the packers show up!
My husband is in school all day, cut off from all communication from the outside world, so he is so grateful that in the tiny amount of daylight free time he has, he doesn’t have to run from this place to that with paperwork. He has friends who are married, who are doing all their own paperwork because either their spouse won’t do it, or they don’t trust them to do it correctly. They spend half of their day out of class trying to get things done, instead of being in class getting the last bit in before heading out to the fleet. They’re finishing out their last few weeks of school with tremendous stress on their shoulders. I’m glad to be able to take that off of my husband so he can do his job, which right now is to ace the last few weeks of school. I encourage all new spouses to see what you can do during your PCS to help take that pressure off your spouse. I know many spouses work on top of being a military spouse, so taking it all on might be too much, but please see what you can do to help. It makes for relaxing nights at home because the business of the day got taken care of during the day. I’m sure as the next few weeks dwindle down the nights will be more full with the actual last minute business of moving, but for right now… we rest, well I rest- he studies!

My Mom and I were just talking about this today. Managing our lives is a full time job. He just doesn’t have time on sea duty to deal with the daily stuff that comes up. I take care of it for him. He trusts me, and because of that, our lives go relatively smoothly. Sometimes though, I think it’s good to remind them of just how much we do. I try to make it as easy as I can for him, but that doesn’t mean it’s actually easy! And I like to make sure he remembers that.
