Lou Diamond Phillips hosts the AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE series on the Military Channel

On today’s show join us as Lou Diamond Phillips stops in to talk about AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE on the Military Channel.

As each film makes its Military Channel premiere, host Lou Diamond Phillips will speak with retired and active duty officers who will reflect on the themes of that night’s film and also provide personal insight that puts each movie into a modern context.

“To have the opportunity to discuss the real-life events and strategies of the heroic efforts of service men and women from our nation’s history is something I will cherish,” said Lou Diamond Phillips. “In Military Channel’s AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE, I am honored to pick the brains of some of America’s heroes, who experienced first-hand the themes showcased in each week’s classic war film.”

In the premiere episode on Friday, April 1 at 8 PM ET, Lou Diamond Phillips and retired Marine Col. Arthur Athens discuss the themes behind the 1979 classic film The Great Santini, starring Robert Duvall, who was nominated for an Academy Award for this role.

– As the director of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership, the former Commandant of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Athens is uniquely able to comment on what it means to be a leader in the military and within a family’s home, where in his own life he has ten children.

AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE will include Kelly’s Heroes, Hart’s War, Windtalkers, Three Kings, and The Dirty Dozen among others.

  1. Just wanted to let you know how much I like the shows. My father was a Japanesse pow. He surived and died in 1981 from the wounds he received. I have a wonderful book that brother researched on all the years he was held. It means a lot to my family that you honor these heros.

    thanks,
    Jen

  2. James McSorley says:

Watched Code Name Emerald last night. A first class spy thriller sadly spoiled by way to many commercial interruptions

  3. Bob Heinrich says:

I am watching “Emerald” which I recorded last week. I hate to say it but it is terrible. I have not watched anything else because I am aware of the other movies and have seen them before. The overall selection of the films is awful. A few good ones would have been:

    -Hamburger Hill

    -They Were Expendable

    -30 Seconds Over Tokyo

    -A Bridger Too Far

    -Guadalcanal Diary

    -Wake Island

    -To Hell and Back

    -Bataan

    -The Man Who Never Was

    -Flags of Our Fathers

Between 3 Kings and Kelly’s Heroes it seem that the only thing our people fight for is “GOLD”. Again, overall movie selection – TERRIBLE!!

  4. B. Lee says:

I have watch your shows and have enjoyed watching them, but I noticed you shows have not included some units that were part of WW 2 that also changed the war. There were such units as the 6888th mail Battalion, how do you think all of thoughs soldiers were able to get there mail, The Tuskegee Airmen African American Pilots who fought over the skies of Germany, The 2nd Battalion Marines who fought in the South pacific theater, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielburg forgot to mention these Marines in their series. The 92nd Infantry Battalion who fought in Italy, and don’t forget about the Red Ball Express. These are just a few of the African Americans who Fought in WW2, that some shows forget to honor. I myself was in the 3rd Marines Div in Viet Mam 1968-69. So how about showing a little color besides changing the films from black and white to color. there is more history that can be told.

  5. Jack Weinberg says:

The movies for the Military Channel are a great idea. However the movie choices are not good so far. Heartbreak Ridge is a terrible war movie(who ever heard of recon marines that were a bunch of slackers), and I’ll bet the movie had more combat than the actual situation. Also, Stallone playing soccer is not a war movie. Also, you’re showing the same bad movies repetitively. Please upgrade the movies. There are many great war movies. Show better ones.

  6. Gene Kruger says:

Terrible Terrible Terrible….terrible choice of movies, terrible concept of playing the same movie twice on Friday night and twice on the next night and the constant repeating of the same movies weekend after weekend is terrible.

This series debuted on April 1 so this makes the 17th weekend that these movies have played…tonight it’s Kelleys Heroes so this is the second weekend this month that they
have shown it..and it was on in June or May…..same thing with Play Dirty and Heartbreak Ridge…so many movies and these clowns just keep playing the same 7 or 8 movies …how lame is that!!!!
