Caramel Macchiato Recipe

Recently, I joined Twitter (www.twitter.com/mymilitarylife) and somehow through clicking around started to follow Karen. Today she tweeted about my favorite drink!!

When getting a fancy coffee, I usually opt for this yummy treat. Since I prefer it iced, I haven’t had one in awhile. ….another reason why I can’t wait for warmer weather!

Well, if you are like me and you LOVE the caramel macchiato, you are going to love this recipe.

Caramel macchiato recipe

In my obsession to save money and be as thrifty as possible I decided there’s not much out there we can’t do ourselves or make ourselves so why not apply that to our fru-fru coffee? I got to the bottom of my new fave – the caramel macchiato. Turns out there’s not much caramel in it. They should probably call it a vanilla macchiato but oh well. So here’s what I’ve found, and after a few attempts my husband even agrees the taste is spot-on. You should try it for yourself…

Ingredients:

double shot of espresso (or a really strong cup of coffee)

4 pumps of Vanilla flavored syrup

hot frothy milk or cream

caramel sauce

Caramel macchiato recipe

Step by step method without having a big fancy machine:

1) make espresso using a french press or you can make a really strong cup of coffee

2) add 4 pumps Torani (or any other brand) vanilla syrup

3) pour about 1/4 cup of milk or cream into a separate cup and microwave it for about a minute or until hot

4) use a nifty gadget like the aerolatte to froth your milk

5) pour frothed milk on top and drizzle with caramel sauce

    That is so funny…when you called me the other day that is what I was making to walk out of the door with. Starbucks finally sells their (to die for) Caramel sauce! MMM! I think I am going to go make one today. YUM!

    I use the Starbucks Barista espresso maker. I don’t think they sell it anymore but I was lucky to get it for half off. I have had it for about 3 years and I use it a lot! It was definitely worth the investment (especially for Half off)

    To make it like Starbucks does, pour the vanilla and milk in first, and the espresso last. “Macchiato” means “marked” in Italian…the espresso “marks” the foam, leaving a bit of bitterness. That caramel on top is supposed to balance out the bitterness.

    I spent my early twenties as a barista. =)

      Lisa,

      I believe your recipe is about the only one that correctly describes how to make a machiato. A machiato is a layered drink with flavoring on the bottom or mixed in with the steamed milk with foam on top of the milk then the espresso slowly poured on top after the foam is placed on top. I just went to a local coffee shop and they just mixed everything all together and told me what I was drinking elsewhere was just a latte. Funny how many different ways people make things and call it the same. There is a big difference in the way the flavors work depending on how you mix it.
